Medical billing and Coding Salaries

There are differences in how much people get paid whether they are going into the billing or coding career field.  In each field there are different levels of pay that you are able to receive depending what type of specialist you become in either field.  As a entry level position medical billing will receive less pay then coders because coders are more of a specialized career industry.

Other things that determine how much you will make in these careers is where you live.  There are differences in pay are determined by living expenses in different cities within the United States.  Obviously someone that lives in California will get paid more for the same type of job as someone that lives in Ohio.  That is how it works, this is because the cost of living is higher in California then it is in Ohio.

Another thing that determine how much someone will get paid might be prior experience.  If someone has been doing this for a long time, they may start out at a higher pay rate then someone that is fresh out of college.  This is because the people that have done this before doesn't require as much training as someone that has just come out of college.  It's not that the person that has more experience is smarter, it just means that they may have ways that they have found out to do something faster then someone that just got out of college.  They are getting paid more because of their experience in the field.

Now that we have gotten through the reasons people get paid more or less, now we can talk about how much people will expect to get paid starting out in these job fields.  The average pay for a medical billing specialist is around $30,000 a year, and the starting salary for someone that is going into the coding field will be around $40,000.  These numbers can fluctuate dramatically depending on the things that we talked about earlier as well as other things.  Now if someone has specialized in a certain type of billing specialist, or coding specialist these numbers also will rise.

There are some benefits of getting into the medical billing and coding fields.  These benefits are that these types of jobs do not fluctuate as much as other jobs depending on the economy of the area.  This is because no matter how the economy is doing people will always have to go to the doctors.  Another benefit is that these are pretty specialized jobs, and once you are in there is a little worry about losing your job to cuts or other reasons because most people cannot do what you do without training.   Other benefits of these types of jobs is that you work at a hospital, and that you will receive great benefits like health insurance and other insurance.  The benefits of someone that decides that they want to work from home is that they are their own boss, and that they do not have a commute to work, another great advantage of working from home is that you can spend more time with your children.

With these benefits there are also some risks involved with getting a job in the medical billing and coding field.  With the technology of computers always growing, there are chances that their jobs become automated.  Another risk that people have is that hospitals are always trying to cut costs, and that if they have the opportunity to cut costs they will, and this doesn't affect only billing and coding but all hospital jobs.  The only thing that will help with these risks are experience, the longer you are with a hospital or medical facility the less of a chance there is that you will be let for any of these reasons.
